The food education movement that
has been held since 1990 in France was held in Japan for the second time this
October. A total of 165 chefs and patissiers visited 72 elementary schools -
spread throughout 21 prefectures across the country - to teach children about
the importance of flavours, using the "Leçon de Gout" curriculum. Various other
events exploring the joys of taste were held as part of "L'atelier du Gout" and
"La Table du Gout". The BENTO competition proved particularly popular, where
nearly 500 contestants showed off their sensibilities with recipes that
incorporated the five flavours saltiness, sourness, bitterness, sweetness and
umami. The competition was also held in the French "La Semaine du Gout".
